It’s curious to note that just over 6 months later, December that year saw the introduction of the famous BR Modernisation plan, including the WCML electrification, which was the first sounding of the death-knell for steam on BR.

Outshopped at the end of April 1954, 73050 was given an exhibition-quality finish and presented at Willesden roundhouse, which had been suitably cleaned up for the members of the International Railway Congress held in London that year.

In the HC Casserly shot on the right, the loco can be seen travelling south for the exhibition.
